The HSE have stated that these items are only to be included if the First Aid Needs Assessment indicates that they may be necessary, and suggest that they are only likely in particularly high risk industries, such as construction.
It is essential that workplace first aiders should be trained in when to apply a tourniquet/haemostatic dressing and the correct technique to apply them. Tourniquets should not to be included in ‘everyday’ first aid and an incorrectly applied tourniquet can increase the severity of a bleed.
We recommend that the appropriate settings consider obtaining a CAT tourniquet for serious wounds, i.e. amputation and if available haemostatic dressings.
Our specialised courses cover the use of haemostatic dressings and tourniquets.
